Improving Skills in Mathematics in Quebec


CIRANO and the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) are partners in En avant math!, a national initiative to promote mathematics and increase numeracy.

Over the past three years, several studies have identified possible solutions to ensure the development of a highly qualified workforce in applied mathematics and to promote a better match between the skills of individuals and the needs of the labour market, particularly in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics sectors.

In this issue of CIRANO's PERSPECTIVES, the authors present the main lessons learned from the first phase of En avant math !

CIRANO is pleased to contribute to the Quebec Innovation Barometer
tw The Quebec Innovation Barometer aims to draw a portrait of innovation in all its forms and to follow its evolution through interactive data, studies and relevant analyses. CIRANO is proud to contribute to the development of this tool based on four pillars: economy, employment and human capital, environment and social innovation. Several CIRANO researchers have participated in the production of two publications on labour and human capital and on the economy.

The various facets of hybrid work: First results of a longitudinal survey on job performance and satisfaction
tw A CIRANO team composed of Ali Béjaoui, professor at the Université du Québec en Outaouais, Sylvie St-Onge, professor at HEC Montréal, Ingrid Peignier, CIRANO's Senior Director of Partnerships and Research Valorization and Felix Ballesteros Leiva, professor at Laval University, is conducting a study that provides evidence to help employers in their decision-making regarding work organization. The first results of the first phase of the project, based on data collected from over 10,000 employees in Quebec, were published in a CIRANO's PERSPECTIVES. The survey is continuing with a second phase of collection.

2023 Fiscal Policy Challenge: One month left to participate!
tw Each year, CIRANO, in collaboration with the Ministère des Finances du Québec, proposes an academic competition aimed at finding innovative and rigorous solutions to current public policy issues. This year's theme is the potential of innovation, the deadline for registration and submission of the essay is March 31, 2023, don't wait anymore!

Effrosyni Diamantoudi is named Concordia’s dean of graduate studies
tw Congratulations to Effrosyni Diamantoudi, Professor in the Department of Economics at Concordia University, Fellow and CIRANO Board Member on her appointment as Dean of Graduate Studies at Concordia University! Prof. Diamantoudi will assume the position of Dean for a five-year term beginning February 17, 2023.

Benoit Dostie, Member of the Canadian Statistical Advisory Council
tw Benoit Dostie, Professor at HEC Montreal, Fellow and Principal Researcher of the CIRANO Innovation and Digital Transformation theme has been appointed to the Canadian Statistics Advisory Council for a three-year term. The Council's mandate is to provide transparent advice to the minister of Innovation, Science and Industry and the Chief Statistician of Canada on the overall quality of the national statistical system.

tw Martino Pelli, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics at the University of Sherbrooke, Fellow and Principal Researcher of the CIRANO Sustainable Development and Agribusiness theme discussed his paper « The effect of forest access on the market for fuelwood in India », co-authored by Branko Boskovic, Ujjayant chakravorty, and Anna Risch, in a 40-minute podcast on ERGS and Equilibrium.

tw Congratulations to Pierre-Carl Michaud, Professor HEC Montreal and Raquel Fonseca, Professor ESG UQAM, both researchers and CIRANO Fellows, for their upcoming publication in the Journal of Political Economy. The study "Understanding Cross-country Differences in Health Status and Expenditures: Health Price Matters", co-authored by Raquel Fonseca, Francois Langot, Pierre-Carl Michaud and Thepthida Sopraseuth, shows the importance of price distortions in explaining differences in health and health care spending across countries.

Michel Magnan, CIRANO Fellow and professor at Concordia University will present the extra-financial risks (ESG) that allow to measure the sustainability of investment products offered to individual investors.

Light trucks are increasingly present in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. Équiterre mandated CIRANO to explore what motivates people to buy this type of vehicle, the typical profile of buyers and the actual use they make of their vehicle. During this conference, Ingrid Peignier, Senior Director of Partnerships and Research Valorization CIRANO researcher will explain the highlights of the CIRANO study on the motivations for light truck purchases in Canada and possible interventions to reverse the trend.
