Conference to launch the activities of Québec économique 10: Compétences et transformation du marché du travail

The Québec économique 10: Compétences et transformation du marché du travail is coming soon!


An hybrid conference will take place on March 15, 2022 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. and will launch the activities related to the book.

During the various activities related to this 10th book, the authors of the book will discuss several key elements of this theme, such as the renewed strength of the labour market in times of pandemic and the issues related to telework. Some possible solutions to labour market imbalances will also be explored: the integration of immigrant workers and marginalized groups and the reorganization of work. In addition, the importance of initial training for individuals and the matching of skills to labour market needs will be discussed.

In this first event moderated by Genevieve Dufour, coordinator of the book, the panelists will present their respective chapters and discuss the skills and importance of education.

Creation of a Claude Montmarquette Scholarship
tw Claude Montmarquette, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Economics at the Université de Montréal, one of the founders and also researcher and Fellow of CIRANO, passed away in September 2021, after a long and distinguished career in which he contributed significantly to public policy development and applied econometrics. The Claude Montmarquette scholarship is an initiative of his colleagues and collaborators at the Department of Economics of the Université de Montréal and CIRANO, as well as his friends, who wish to pay tribute to him and honor his memory.

Appointment of three new CIRANO researchers

Laure Saulais (PhD in Economic Sciences), Associate Professor in the Department of Agri-Food, Economics and Consumer Sciences at Laval University, Jie He (PhD in Economic Sciences), Full Professor in the Department of Economics at Sherbrooke university and Federico Severino (PhD in Economics and Finance), Assistant Professor in the Department of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate at Laval University.

Martino Pelli received the «Excellence in Research Award» from the School of Management of Sherbrooke University
tw As part of the Research Day of the School of Management of the University of Sherbrooke, Martino Pelli, associate professor in the Department of Economics of the University of Sherbrooke and CIRANO researcher, received the 2021 « Research Excellence Award ». This distinction recognizes his excellence in research over the past three years as well as his ability to address the consequences of major events (such as hurricanes) at the household level.

35th edition of the Bourstad Challenge
tw The 2022 Bourstad challenge started on February 14th! Until April 14, 2022, novice and seasoned investors will have the opportunity to manage a $200,000 virtual portfolio and invest this amount by choosing securities from a selection of real securities listed on stock markets. At the awards ceremony in May 2022, the simulation jury will award prizes totaling more than $35,000 to the top performers in the three components of the competition: financial performance, portfolio management and responsible investing.

Study to assess the incidence of COVID-19 in Quebec - Updated with data from the week of February 24 to March 1st, 2022
tw CIRANO has published an update of its exploratory study to estimate the incidence of COVID-19 cases in Quebec. This update integrates the data from the seventh week of collection, which took place from february 24 to march 1st 2022. The data collected seem to confirm that the incidence of cases continues to decline slightly.This seventh week of collection reinforces the fact that the network scale-up (NSS) method better tracks the long-term trend and that the NSS estimators are much more robust than the direct sampling strategy.

Information tools on food, biofood products and food risks in Quebec
tw Bernard Korai, Associate Professor in the Department of Agri-Food Economics and Consumer Sciences at Laval University and CIRANO researcher, and Ibrahima Bocoum, Associate Professor at Laval University, recently published the study «Information tools on food, bio-food products and food risks in Quebec». This study analyses the factors contributing to the quality of food and nutritional information in Quebec, and how this affects the level of Quebecers’ food literacy. It also suggests potential avenues for promoting healthy eating habits.

Old age is often associated with lower income and labour supply, and with higher medical and long-term care needs. As population ages, this creates challenges both for society and individuals, some of which (especially related to long-term care) have been reinforced with the recent pandemic.  As part of the « Montreal Series on the Economy of Aging », the conference on the economy of aging will take place on April 28 and 29 (in person) at CIRANO. Is an open academic event that will gather international and national scientists studying the economics of ageing.
