Each year CIRANO identifies a thematic which will structure part of the scientific animation. Aligned with our strategic plan, the chosen thematic for 2019-2020 is: Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence.

Our 2019-2020 research programming will adopt this thematic by organizing several activities and conferences on that subject. .

CIRANO’s products, Le Québec économique, CIRANO’s Barometer and Mondo International will also adhere to this thematic.

Appointment of John W. Galbraith as the new President of CIRANO Scientific Committee
tw CIRANO is pleased to announce the appointment of John W. Galbraith as President of CIRANO Scientific Committee. John W. Galbraith is a CIRANO Researcher and Fellow and full professor in the Department of Economics at McGill University. His research interests include econometrics, macroeconomics and finance.

Appointment of 21 principal researchers in charge of leading CIRANO's major research themes
tw After an extensive consultative process, the research and liaison and transfer activities were reorganized around nine major themes and two transversal poles, one around "Modelling the Québec economy" and the other around the "Socio-economic impacts of digital innovation and AI". They represents both the expertise and interests of the researchers and the priorities and challenges of the partners.

The 8th annual Workshop on Networks in Trade and Finance will take place on October 18 and October 19, 2019 at CIRANO. This workshop is organized jointly with CIRANO and the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas, and builds on the successful CIRANO Workshops on Networks in Trade and Finance that have taken place in Montreal, Fayetteville (Arkansas, USA) and Lucca (Italy) over the last seven years.

External Activity: 2019 Canadian Econometric Study Group Meetings
October 18-20, 2019
The conference is organized by the Departments of Economics at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and Concordia University and will be hosted at UQAM. The theme is “Machine Learning Econometrics”, with invited speakers Gregory Duncan (Amazon and University of Washington) and Dacheng Xiu (University of Chicago).

Symposium: 40 Years of Bill 101 in Québec - Five Experts' Views

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Bill 101 in 2017, the management of Language Problems and Language Planning magazine entrusted François Vaillancourt, CIRANO Researcher and Fellow and Emeritus Professor at Université de Montréal, with the responsibility of producing a special issue of this journal examining the effects of this law. This issue contains articles by Richard Bourhis, Charles Castonguay, Gilles Grenier, Michel Paillé and Marc Termotte. It has just been published and this conference presents the main results.
