HEC Forecast 2022

HEC Forecast 2022 took place on February 4, 2022, it was an online event featuring conferences, panels and networking AI in tomorrow's economy.

Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin, main researcher of the Innovation and Digital Transformation theme, responsible of the CIRANO Pole on the socio-economic impacts of digital intelligence and Full Professor at Polytechnique Montréal and Thierry Warin, Researcher, Fellow, responsible of the CIRANO Pole on data science for trade and intermodal transport and Full Professor at HEC Montréal participated in the conversation around the topics of the use of data science in organizations, the risks associated with data and the implications of AI in tomorrow’s economy.

Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin presented CIRANO's work in data science and more specifically the report published by the Autorité des marchés financiers (Québec) and Algora Lab in collaboration with CIRANO and the International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of AI and Digital Technology (OBVIA): L’intelligence artificielle en finance : Recommandations pour une utilisation responsable 

 

Nathalie De Marcellis-Warin

Nathalie de Marcellis-Warin joined CIRANO in 2000 as a postdoctoral researcher and was appointed President and CEO in 2016, after serving as Vice-President from 2008 to 2016. Since 2011, she has led the CIRANO Barometer project on risk perception in Quebec, which annually collects data on Quebecers’ concerns regarding 47 major societal issues. She is also Head of the CIRANO Research Pole on the Socioeconomic Impacts of Digital Intelligence and Principal Investigator of the Innovation and Digital Transformation research theme.

She is a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, where she also serves as Academic Director of PolyFinances. In addition, she is a Visiting Scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and an Associate Researcher at the Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO).

She holds a PhD in Management Science (specializing in risk management and insurance) from the École normale supérieure de Cachan. Her research focuses on risk management and decision-making in contexts of risk and uncertainty, as well as the design and evaluation of public policies. Her work combines economic analysis, cost-benefit analysis, survey data analysis, and more recently, large-scale unstructured data analytics.

In 2008, she founded the RISQH network, a knowledge-sharing and awareness network dedicated to risk management, patient safety, and quality of care in healthcare institutions. She contributed to the development of the Montreal Declaration for a Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence.

She serves as Scientific Director of the Measurement Tools, Monitoring and Surveys Division at the International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of AI and Digital Technologies (OBVIA). She is also co-founder of the International Francophone Network on Scientific Advice (RFICS).

At CIRANO, she leads and contributes to several large-scale research initiatives, notably the creation of an economic digital twin of the St. Lawrence–Great Lakes region (GVCdtLab), developed in collaboration with the federal government.

She has published numerous scientific articles, several books, and more than 40 reports for government and other organizations. She has delivered over one hundred conferences and is regularly invited to speak in the media.

Thierry Warin

A CIRANO Researcher and Fellow since 2001, Main Researcher of the theme World Economy, Researcher in charge of Mondo.international, Thierry Warin is Full Professor in the Department of International Business at HEC Montréal. He has a Professorship in Data Science for International Business. He is President of the International Trade and Finance Association, Member of the board of editors of International Journal of Economics and Business Research, Fellow of the Salzburg Global Seminar, Researcher at CERIUM-CEUE (Université de Montréal) and President and co-founder of the NGO Ed' Haïti.

Holding a Ph.D. in Monetary Economics and Finance from ESSEC Business School, his research is mainly on international economics and finance topics, with a particular focus on the European economic integration, while using Data Science as his main methodological approach.

Thierry Warin was Full Professor at SKEMA Business School Raleigh (Founder and Director of the SKEMA Global Lab in AI), Associate Professor at Polytechnique Montréal (Director of the International Projects Program), Associate Professor at Middlebury College (Director of the International Studies and IPE program) and Academic Director at SIE-Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou.

An alumnus of the Salzburg Global Seminar, a former Visiting Scholar at the Minda De Gunzburg Center for European Studies (Harvard University, 2005) and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs (Harvard University, 2015-2017), he has authored numerous academic publications and books or special issues.
