Assisted housing in Quebec

The government of Quebec spends nearly one billion dollars annually on housing support. Nonetheless, every summer the shortage of subsidized housing dominates the headlines. How do we explain this apparent discrepancy?

In June, Claude Montmarquette and Mathieu Laberge published a research paper that carefully examined this issue. They found that these Quebec housing assistance programs are very diversified. They also observed that the lower proportion of social housing available in Quebec compared to many other countries can be attributed to low rents and the disparity of assistance programs.

In this Web event, you will find:
  • An interview with Claude Montmarquette and Mathieu Laberge in which they explain that simply building more social housing would not fully satisfy the demand for affordable housing;
  • An interactive table of vacancy rates in Quebec and their trend over the past year;
  • Thematic files that summarize key aspects of the study.
